Re: [-empyre-] Reactions 2 Documenta - " The worst art show ever"



I just would like to call coleagues attention to the fact that this
kind of reaction is not very different from the way critics have
reacted to the first exhibitions of the impressionist painters, in the
begginings of modern art.

This kind of agressive rethorics is very similar to the reactions many
people had regarding the last Sao Paulo Bienal, one year ago.

I haven`t been able to follow the whole discussion here -- and I
haven`t visited the Documenta,  unfortunatelly. But it seems to me
that when an art exhibition provokes such strong reactions, there are
things for us to think.

Concerning the Bienal here, I found it a very rich and complex
exhibition that could offer a portrait of the complexity of
contemporary world and culture. I don`t think it is possible anymore
that an art exhibition such as Documenta or the Sao Paulo Bienal to
offer a frame  of the unquestionable contemporary artworks. And the
whole concept of avant-garde is, of course, absolutely uselless
nowadays.

So, curators try to work carefully and hard to bring a landscape that
can give account of the diversity and complexity of contemporary
expression (expression is NOT the best word, but
please forgive-me), ina word where the definition of a work of art is
in itself very problematic, as much as its role in contemporary
culture (politics? poetics? beauty? technological propection? etc,
etc.) is very complex -- the way different social forces try to take
profit of art production to different interests.

I`ve seen Roger Buergel speaking in Brazil. As much as, it seems to
me, Lisette Lagnado has done in the Bienal, he seemes interested in
bringing as much different voices to the Documenta. Part of this
effort is the Documenta Magazines project.

It`s very easy to criticise and exhibition, but enormous shows like
Sao Paulo Bienal and the Documenta, demand that you are interested in
really spending a lot of your time with the space and the artworks
before the works start to speak for themselves. If they were expected
to be of imediate impact, we should maybe expect a pop-art
retrospective.

And not one text or article published along the works should teach you
how to experiment them. We are not in the era of prescriptions on "how
to experiment this work". Each artwork creates its own spectator,
invents its space-time fruition.

Of course there must be things to be criticized on Documenta, as much
as in the Bienal. But as for the Bienal, I found it a very rich
experience and portrait of contemporary world;
I would like to read people recognizing the openings offered by
serious effort of facing the challenges of curating such enormous
exhibitions. I`m sure that Buergel's team and other curators and
people involved with the Documenta took it very serious the challenge
of preparing this very important cultural event.

And then, after verifying the oppenings, we should then make the
inventory of the limits.

I hope I`m not very outside problems being posed here.
